What Is A Gigapixel Photo?

What Is A Gigapixel Photo? A gigapixel photo is a digital image composed of a billion pixels,  1000 times the data saved by your typical digital camera. Currently the way to do this is to stitch or create mosaics at a very high resolution and many images. Some people are also scanning film negatives as large as 10″ × 9″ and as much as 18″ × 9″ which is then scanned with a high-end large-format film scanner with at least 3000 dpi resolution.

Currently as of 2011 there are only a few cameras that can make a gigpixel photo in 1 capture or a series of captures with their camera. They Pan-STARRS PS1 and the Gigapxl Camera.

I’ll be reviewing these gigapixel camera and the gigapixel photos they produce very soon.

Stay tuned.
